MDI YMCA

Swim Team . . .

The MDI Sharks are one of the most competitive and successful swim teams in the State of Maine. Originally organized in 1971 by Bob Chaplin & Harlow Cameron, the program has produced some of the fastest swimmers in New England. Lenny Demuro, for whom the pool is named, took over as coach in 1974. Under his leadership close to a thousand young swimmers have learned the value of team spirit, physical fitness and plain hard work.

Coach Demuro stepped down in 2001 and Aquatics Director Jim Willis now feeds the Sharks who remain among the State's top teams.

This year, the YMCA Sharks Swim Team began the season in October and will end in early April. Already, 30 swimmers have qualified for the Maine Swimming Championships (JO’s) and 2 swimmers (Frank Carbone & Justin Gilmartin) have qualified for the Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Swim Team members take a short break in April, then begin in mid-May for spring and summer sessions. The Sharks Swim team is for anyone who can swim the length of the YMCA’s Lenny DeMuro Swimming Pool.

If you have questions about joining the team, please contact Head Coach Jim Willis 288-3511 x114 sharks@mdiymca.org. Y Membership Required
