YMCA National Healthy Kids Day!

The MDI YMCA and 16 other YMCA’s throughout Maine have teamed up with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield to present the 17th Annual Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 12, from 9:00am – noon at the MDI YMCA on Park Street in Bar Harbor. This event is free and open to everyone. Planned activities include Jungle Monkey Bounce House, Dance – Dance Revolution, nutritious snacks, music, a rhythmic gymnastics demonstration, a child friendly obstacle course, summer camp registration, representatives from the Bar Harbor Police and Fire Departments, MDI Hospital, Acadia Little League and Acadia Football League, the United States Coast Guard, fun games, and goody bags for every child in attendance. Although the event runs from 9am – noon, there will also be a free, open swim from 11:30am – 3:00pm.

Presented as an opportunity for children and families to “put play in their day,” this event uses free, fun, engaging and creative activities to encourage children and families to adopt behaviors that support a healthy lifestyle. Participating families will also receive a “Healthy Family Home” booklet that provides practical tools for children and parents to work together to embrace healthy habits at home.

"Healthy Kids Day activities show families and children that making healthy choices can be easy, fun and accessible to everyone”, said Dan Berry, the executive director of the MDI YMCA. “Participants will also walk away with several take-home tools to help them assess the foundation of how they play, eat and connect together as a family."

Unhealthy eating and physical inactivity are associated with an increased risk of a number of chronic health conditions, including overweight and obesity. In fact, the percentage of young people who are overweight has tripled over the last 25 years. In 2005, a panel of experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that school-age children should participate in moderate to vigorous activity for a minimum of 60 minutes a day. Studies have shown that children who develop healthy exercise and eating habits while they are young are more likely to continue to lead healthy lifestyles through adulthood.

"Exercise and healthy eating are critical to improving the health and well-being of Maine children and their families and instilling lifelong healthy habits," said Mark Ishkanian, the director of communications for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. "Anthem is proud to partner with YMCAs throughout Maine in sponsoring Healthy Kids Day.”

Boston Celtics Legend K.C. Jones in Bar Harbor 8/20/07- 08/24/07 with Skip Chappelle

K.C. Jones will spend this week in Bar Harbor, running a YMCA basketball camp for children and also hosting a fundraising event at a local golf club.  A Boston Celtics legend both as a player and as a head coach, K.C. Jones is one of only seven players in history to have won a NCAA Championship, Olympic Gold Medal and NBA Championship as a player, coach and assistant coach during his career.

K.C.’s basketball camp happens Monday, August 20th through Friday, August 24th at the MDI YMCA in Bar Harbor. Participants will have a unique opportunity to learn from a man whose basketball accomplishments are virtually unequaled. Camp highlights will include station drills, fundamentals, scrimmages and a mini-tournament. Lectures by K.C. and other special guests, including former U Maine Black Bears coach Skip Chappelle are also scheduled.  Children ages 7 – 11 will attend camp from 9:00am – noon and children 12 – 18 will attend camp from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. The camp is sponsored by Tom Walsh’s Ocean Properties.

After participating in a local fundraising golf tournament, K.C. Jones will host a cocktail party and silent auction at a local Bar Harbor Golf Club. The cocktail party/auction is open to the public and is a great opportunity for fans to meet K.C. Jones, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and to bid on great sports memorabilia as well. The event takes place on Wednesday, August 22nd from 4:00pm – 6:15pm at Kebo Valley Golf Club on the Cromwell Harbor Road in Bar Harbor.  Admission is only $15 per person with funds raised benefiting the MDI YMCA’s scholarship fund.

Although space is limited, there are still openings in the MDI YMCA’s K.C. Jones Basketball Camp. To register for it, or to register for the Kebo Valley Cocktail Party and Silent Auction, please contact the MDI Y at 288-3511, or email info@mdiymca.org.
