Head instructor Nate Mason, a 5th Degree Black Belt has over 15 years teaching Karate. All Eastern Maine Karate instructors are certified black belts by the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Federation, headquartered in Okinawa, Japan. This form of traditional, Okinawan Karate dates back to over 300 years. Also included, students are instructed in the ancient Okinawan farming and fishing tools (weapons) adapted for self defense. Course curriculum is provided by and overseen by grandmaster Fusei Kise, 10th degree black belt, who makes annual visits to the MDI YMCA to meet his students. All Course fees include certifications, testing fees, and monthly association dues. There are no other fees or costs needed to attend.
Youth Class (Ages 5 - 12)
An introduction to the fundamentals of martial arts. Basic blocks, punches and kicks will be taught. Class progresses by putting moves together into forms (kata) and the Bo (staff). Class focus is on developing self-confidence & self-discipline. Students also learn about the history & culture of Japan.
Advanced Youth Class (Ages 7 - 12)
Instructor permission required. Advanced forms (kata), weapons, grappling & falling techniques are taught. Students learn about the history & culture of Japan. Green belt level & above required in order to attend.
Adult Class (Ages 13+)
All ages & abilities. You don’t have to be in peak physical shape or be able to lift your leg above your head to enjoy this class. Students progress at own pace and learn the basics of karate & the art of Okinawan weapons. Students gain a new understanding about the culture, language and history of Japan.
Black Belt Class (Ages 13+)
First degree black belts and above. Topics include advanced weaponry (bo, sai, kama, tunfa, nunchaku, ekku, nunti bo, nitan bo, tetsuko), tuide (joint locks and takedowns), koteate/makawara (body and hand toughening), tai sabaki (body change), and hakusuru (white crane fighting).
