ABOUT THE MOUNT DESERT ISLAND YMCA
A Community Cornerstone...
For over ten decades the Mount Desert Island YMCA has helped train five generations of young men and women to win gracefully, lose with dignity, embrace wellness, and above all, enjoy the satisfaction of a personal best effort. We are the heart of health & wellness, fitness classes, sports, camp, childcare, preschool, aquatics, senior activities, and swim lessons on Mount Desert Island, Maine. We even host the MDI YMCA BHBT Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Half Marathon in September.
We are more than a beautiful, six lane indoor pool, fitness center or gymnasium however – we are a cornerstone for the Mt. Desert Island community. Start a conversation about the MDI Y in Bar Harbor with anyone and they will invariably have a great story to tell; earning 10¢ a game to reset bowling pins on the Y’s four candlepin lanes in the 1940’s or, at age 7, mustering the courage to face the booming voice of the Shark's swim team coach, Lenny DeMuro. Perhaps they will recall running a personal best time at the annual Half Marathon race in Acadia National Park in fog so thick they couldn't see 50 feet up the road. If you’re a member of or day visitor to the MDI YMCA, you probably have your own story you could add here. Come visit and see for yourself what a difference we make in the lives of our fellow community members... besides improving your own health and physical fitness...just think of the stories you could tell!
